Information for Teachers

Thank you for signing up for our STEM Outreach Project. On this page you can download all the resources needed to deliver our two activity packs in your school:

Pack 1 - Engineering - building a motorised fairground ride
Pack 2 - Forensic Science - carrying out experiments to help solve crimes

Both these packs can be used as either stand-alone activities or as a follow up to a STEM Outreach day at Westfield. (Due to Covid 19 restrictions, our outreach day events are currently suspended, but we hope that they will be running again later in 2021).
Given the loss of science learning over the lockdown, the contents of the two packs have been specially designed to promote problem solving, scientific enquiry using the scientific method and both predominantly feature practical work.

The packs are designed to be suitable for pupils in years 4-6 and they can be run in a variety of ways. Some suggestions for approaches include a one-off science day, daily lessons during a science week, a series of weekly lessons over a half term or as the focus of a science club over half a term or longer. Within both packs there is a focus on promoting science careers and the packs are suitable for both girls and boys to use.

This webpage contains all the resources required to run the sessions (use the link below to download everything), but you will also need a physical box of resources for each activity which will send out to you once you have registered.  This contains everything that you will need to run the practical sessions, including equipment, handouts etc. The teachers’ guide for each pack also includes full risk assessments for all practical activities.

To encourage pupils to extend their learning & explore STEM independently, we have also provided a pupil page on this website, which contains follow up homework or extension activities.

We would be grateful if you could send the link to this out to pupils and parents when you undertake the activity, to encourage them to make the most of this resource.
We hope that we have provided everything you need to successfully deliver these activities, but if you have any questions or your physical pack has not arrived as expected, please feel free to contact us on mbrannigan@westfield.newcastle.sch.uk

At the end of each activity, we would be very grateful if you can complete and return the teacher & pupil feedback forms so that we can assess the effectiveness of the packs and make further improvements.

We hope that you and your pupils enjoy taking part!
